Database Migration

Overview

Canine to Five is Metro Detroit's finest dog daycare, boarding, and grooming facility, located in the heart of Detroit's Historic Midtown Neighborhood. Canine to Five is a staple in Detroit culture and, through its commitment to dogs and their owners, it has grown to include a second location in Ferndale.

Challenge

Canine to Five was looking to overhaul its entire customer management software into an all-new, all-inclusive, cloud-based software. PDS was tasked with the data transformation process from the old format to the new for daycare, boarding, and grooming. This transformation had to be undertaken for both C25 facilities.

Solution

PDS worked with the Canine to Five staff to analyze and design the target format. We helped them scope and identify only the data needed to fulfill the requirements of the new system. This included analyzing the SQL database containing the raw data so that we could extract the data to a usable format. We assessed the data for column names, data types, the relationships between columns, the range of values, the frequency of missing or junk data, and the number of rows.

Next, PDS performed a data cleanse to transform formats including date, numerical and phone numbers for the new system, clean the address information, and check for columns that may show a large frequency of missing values or junk data. After, PDS was able to map the cleansed source data to the target data and upload the newly transformed data into the new system.

PDS then provided on-site support to Canine to Five staff during the software migration process in order to ensure data viability and to immediately address any issues that may have existed.

Summary

PDS carefully and successfully extracted, examined, refined, and delivered the data in such a way as to maximize its value. This process included rigorous user acceptance testing, and the PDS transformation team was able to quickly address any anomalies found in the new system. Canine to Five was able to smoothly transfer to the new system without any loss of data or negative impact on their daily business.
